The National Cancer Institute has a great fact sheet on the benefits of physical activity in regards to cancer and cancer survivorship.

Key Points
• Physical activity is a critical component of energy balance, the term researchers use to describe how weight, diet, and physical activity influence health.

• There is strong evidence that physical activity is associated with reduced risk of cancers of the colon and breast.

• Several studies have also reported links between physical activity and reduced risk of endometrial (lining of the uterus), lung, and prostate cancers.

• Current National Cancer Institute-funded studies are exploring the role of physical activity in cancer survivorship and quality of life, cancer risk, and the needs of populations at increased risk.

You can read the full article HERE or download the PDF.

Our Western NY Wellness outdoor biking season begins on Monday, April 30 at a NEW LOCATION. We are hoping to see many more of you begin or continue a regular cycling program with us. We will have members of Quality Care Pharmacies Cycling Team present to assist in the rides. We are including the use of paved bike trails around Rochester along with our road rides in Mendon Ponds Park and Northampton. See the May schedule below and also on our CALENDAR.

May will be our “get ready” month and we will explore a different paved bike trail each week. All rides will be based on YOUR ability and grouped accordingly. No one will be left behind. Rides could range from 1-20+ miles, depending on the group. Our emphasis is on FUN and for safety, on the trail and especially on the road. This is a great way to learn what your bike can do and expand your outlook about riding on the roads. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED. Pump up your tires, you will need a filled water bottle, and be sure to bring an extra tube, just in case. ( help to fix flats is available)

Rides during June, July and August will cycle between the 4 locations. Be sure to check the location each week, on the website. We have sports drinks and water available after each ride and also have plans to have a cook out, after a ride, a few times this summer. There is no charge for any of this. All we ask is for your participation. It’s your organization.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Monday, APRIL 30 Meet at Brighton Town Park (entrance on Westfall Rd., near S.Clinton Ave.) 6 PM

We will have a short ride to Pittsford and back. WNY Wellness will treat you to an ice cream cone by the canal in Pittsford. New members are especially welcome and you’re welcome to bring a friend.

Monday, May 7 6 PM. Meet at Canal Ponds Park, Long Pond Rd. Entrance. Ride the paved trail to Genesee Valley Park Park and return.

WNYWP Interval Circuit Classes to be Offered

Personal Trainer (and longtime WNYWP spin instructor) Susan Siebert has offered to put together an Interval Circuit Class Session this winter for survivor members and supporters of Western New York Wellness Inc. Susan’s new fitness studio, The Physical Forum, located at 1350 University Avenue (at the intersection of Blossom Rd.), will be the site for 6 Saturday afternoons of core strengthening and fitness activities. And who couldn’t use that?? This class will be geared to the cancer survivor and, as she has always done in our spin classes, she will always adjust to each individual’s personal level.

Below is the information from The Physical Forum website (http://www.thephysicalforum.com) about Interval Circuit Classes. Picture yourself working at each station to build your core strength and cardio fitness.

Each class is one hour. The cost is $10/class; the session = 6 consecutive Saturdays, 1pm, likely beginning after January 1st, 2012!
The fee is payable in advance, but remember to submit to your health insurance company for reimbursement or check out the WNYWP website for a fitness grant application! (Checks are payable to Susan Siebert.)

Enrollment will be limited to 10 people, so we need you to email us quickly with your intention to participate right away. More to follow soon with exact details.

Each of our Interval Circuit Classes are individual and programmed to be challenging and most of all FUN!
No matter what experience you may have had with other types of group exercise classes, we are more than sure that our classes will surprise you with the variety of activities. Each class has 10 stations set throughout the studio. Everyone is taken around the stations, explained the exercise for each and has an opportunity to try the exercise before the timing begins, so that you are familiar with what you will be doing before the whistle blows.

Attendance is limited to ten participants so each person can be assured of personal attention to prevent wrong form or technique…all of which ensures that you get the most from each station.

After the pre-hab warm up trips around the studio, we give you the opportunity to begin at a station of your choice. We will begin with a 30 second circuit, and….we increase timing occasionally to keep things moving forward with your level of fitness.

We utilize all of our functional training equipment….as in stability balls, tubing, Bosu Balance Trainer, TRX Suspension Trainer, plyo boxes and medicine balls. You will find that some stations involve flexibility in a fashion that perhaps is new to you. Core strengthening is foremost in our class programming…using as many different ways as possible to strengthen your pillar.

We also make sure that you not only get some balance training, but cardio stations that could be anything from ellipticals to slide/skate board, jump ropes or agility work. Add into that some of the Life Fitness machines, free weights, Smith machine, Functional Cable Column, Weight Assist or leg press, and you are sure to find something you know and something new to learn.

Most importantly we want you to have fun…try new things…expand your capabilities and elevate your fitness level for optimum performance no matter what your lifestyle entails, or athletic endeavors you enjoy. So, if you are looking for something that will challenge you, make you sweat and elevate your fitness, sign up for these classes! We look forward to seeing you soon.

Remember - No excuses – there are always options & progressions!

Call or email us to let us know your intention to participate!

LiveSTRONG … BE STRONG!

LiveSTRONG Day Ride 2011 Tour de Rochester

Saturday, October 1st, 2011
Meet at the Ferry Terminal Parking Lot at Ontario Beach Park at 10:00am.

Help us wrap up the outdoor riding season for Western New York Wellness with a group ride through Rochester’s most scenic spots in honor of LiveSTRONG Day. Across the world people will be observing this day with events to honor the 28 million survivors of cancer – and honoring the memory of those for whom the answers did not come soon enough!

The 30 mile ride is all on paved paths with short distances on roads. (There are many opportunities to shorten the ride with turnaround points and shortcuts throughout.) And no one will be left behind! We ride from Charlotte south along the path to Long Pond Road in Greece where we pick up the Canal Path. We cross the Genesee River at Genesee Valley Park and head north along the river, through downtown Rochester and then down to the river path to Turning Point Park and back to the ferry terminal parking lot.

Invite your friends to come out and join us in this very memorable day!

If you cannot join us for the ride and would like to make a contribution, do the following:
Make your check out to LiveStrong Foundation and send it to
Western New York Wellness
P.O. Box 207
Brockport,NY 14420

We will collect all donations and send them on the LiveStrong Foundation as a statement of our thanks for starting our wellness program in 2003.
